Write down the journey you are checking
Start with your passport nationality, document type, purpose of travel, intended arrival and departure dates, and each place where you will cross a border. Include any transit and any later return to mainland China. These details help you ask a clear question and find the rule that actually applies to you.
Use the National Immigration Administration’s official guidance and the relevant Chinese embassy or consulate for current entry and visa information. Read the conditions, not only a headline or a list of nationalities. A friend’s experience is useful context but cannot establish your own eligibility.
Check the document before committing
Look at the passport you will actually carry. Check its validity and condition against the official requirements for your journey. Check whether a visa or another permission is needed, and read any permitted stay, entry count or route conditions that apply. Resolve uncertainties with the relevant authority before making arrangements you cannot easily change.
Use the same document details consistently when arranging transport. If you renew a passport after booking, ask each provider how to update the reservation. Our transport guide explains why matching the rail booking and travel document matters.
Prepare arrival information through official channels
The NIA provides online arrival-card channels and describes alternatives for people who cannot complete the information in advance. Its notice also lists exemptions. Check which process applies to you using the official arrival-card notice; an arrival card does not replace an entry permission.
Keep your first accommodation’s address, journey details and important confirmations accessible offline. Hotels register their own guests. If you stay somewhere other than a hotel, you or your host must register the stay with the local police within 24 hours of arrival. Since 21 September 2026 this can also be done online through NIA channels, as set out in NIA Announcement No. 7 of 2026. Agree with your host who will handle it.
Recheck when the journey changes
A different passport, purpose, border crossing or travel date can change what you need to confirm. Keep the official pages with your planning notes and check them again close to departure. Use the preparation checklist to record what is confirmed and what still needs an answer.
