Compare door to door
When choosing between rail and a flight, write down the whole move: leaving your accommodation, reaching the departure point, check-in or station procedures, the scheduled journey and the onward trip to your next stay. A short published travel time is only one part of the day.
Compare this with the time and energy left for exploring. A direct connection that suits your accommodation may work better than a faster service with awkward transfers. Check actual options for your date; this guide does not establish a timetable or availability.
Check the name, not just the city
Read the full airport or station name on every booking. Save the name in Chinese as well as English when available. Put the departure and arrival locations on a map and check the route to each accommodation. Do the same for any connecting service rather than assuming it uses the same terminal or station.
Avoid planning a major attraction immediately after a connection whose onward journey you have not checked. If you are changing between separately booked services, understand what happens if the first is delayed before choosing the connection.
Match your rail ticket and document
Start with the official 12306 English website to search rail journeys. China Railway’s 12306 FAQ describes real-name ticketing and the use of valid passports for eligible foreign passengers. Check its current guidance for your document and booking channel. Enter passenger details carefully and carry the valid document used for the booking when travelling.
If a passport has changed since you booked, resolve the mismatch with the operator before the travel day. Keep the confirmation available offline, but do not assume a screenshot replaces the required travel document.
Give the route room
Start with overnight stays, then mark the moving days. The 14-day Beijing–Xi’an–Shanghai example demonstrates that approach. If your outline feels crowded, compare removing a stop before reducing every city to a short visit.
Prepare your phone and offline information, check the operator’s current luggage and boarding guidance, and keep the last part of each arrival day flexible. Choose your own connection buffer from the actual booking conditions and your group’s needs.
