Your first day in China

Land, connect, reach your hotel, then explore a little.

Before the plane lands

Make a short arrival note that works without a connection. Include your hotel’s Chinese name and address, the full airport or station name, your booking reference and the first journey you intend to take. Save the hotel entrance on a map, not just a pin somewhere inside a large complex. Keep a charged phone and the travel document you will use within reach.

Check your own entry conditions before departure using the National Immigration Administration’s services and the relevant embassy or consulate. If an arrival card applies to you, use the official NIA instructions. They describe online and on-arrival channels and exemptions; the card is separate from permission to enter.

1. Get connected before solving everything else

Once you have completed the arrival formalities, activate the connection you prepared. Test a map search and a message to someone you know. If you need a local SIM, go to an official carrier store and ask about a suitable package and registration. Shanghai’s mobile-service guide describes bringing a passport for this process.

Keep access to your original phone number if a bank or app sends verification codes there. Before leaving a Wi-Fi area, open your route once and save the essential details. A map, translation app and payment app are a useful first set; the rest can wait.

2. Make the hotel journey straightforward

Choose between public transport and a licensed taxi or booked ride based on the whole journey. A direct rail connection can be convenient with light luggage. A ride may be easier after a long flight, with children or when the final station is far from the hotel. Check the terminal, destination and last walking section before choosing.

Use the airport’s signed transport facilities. For a booked ride, match the car and plate shown in the app. Show the hotel’s Chinese address when needed. If the hotel uses more than one entrance, use the arrival note rather than starting a new search at the kerb.

3. Try one small payment

At the hotel or a convenient shop, try a small legitimate purchase with your prepared payment method. Check the merchant and amount before confirming. If it fails, use your backup rather than repeatedly changing settings while tired. The payment guide explains the setup and separate backup options.

4. Give the first outing a small boundary

After check-in, choose a meal and a short walk near the hotel. In Shanghai that might be a neighbourhood loop; in Beijing it might be a nearby park or a few lanes. Save the return route before leaving. An evening arrival can simply mean dinner and rest.

Use the first day to learn a few useful things: where breakfast is, how to reach the nearest transport stop and whether your phone and payment work. Keep the first major reservation for a day when a delayed arrival will not decide whether you miss it. Before sleeping, check tomorrow’s exact destination and the document needed for any rail booking. The planning checklist keeps those tasks together.
