Paying in China

Prepare a working first choice and a separate backup.

Practical guide · 3 min read · Check the linked official sources before travelling

Build a small payment plan

Before departure, list how you expect to pay for a meal, a larger purchase and an unexpected expense. Your aim is to have more than one usable option. Do not make every backup depend on the same phone, app or bank card.

Bank of China’s visitor guide describes overseas bank cards, mobile payments and cash services. It explains that supported overseas cards can be linked to payment apps, while card payments depend on the merchant accepting the relevant network. Use it to understand the options, then confirm current details with your bank and chosen app.

Set up Alipay or Weixin Pay before departure

Bank of China’s guide says an overseas bank card can be linked to Alipay or WeChat (whose payment function is Weixin Pay). Start with one, then prepare a separate backup:

  1. Download Alipay or WeChat from the official app-store listing.
  2. Register with a phone number you can still access during the trip.
  3. Open the app’s bank-card or wallet section and add your overseas card, following its current prompts.
  4. Complete any identity and card verification requested. Keep access to bank authentication messages.
  5. Check current supported cards and charges with the app and your bank. Keep a physical card and a cash-access plan as backups.

Shanghai’s official payment guide notes that whether a card links can depend on its network and issuing bank. A linked card does not mean every merchant or transaction will accept it. If you change your SIM or phone, make sure you can still sign in and receive verification messages.

Give the backup a separate route

Ask your bank about overseas use and what to do if a payment is declined. Check the network marks on your cards and carry a second option where practical. If you plan to obtain cash, check your bank’s withdrawal arrangements and charges; decide how you will reach your accommodation if your first digital payment fails.

Keep cards and essential recovery information secure. Never give a stranger your verification codes or account password to fix a payment problem. Use the bank or app’s own support channel.

Make arrival easier

Have your accommodation name and address ready, a connection plan for your phone and a way to pay for the first journey. Our internet and apps guide helps with the phone side; the preparation checklist brings the tasks together. Fees, card support and merchant acceptance should be checked for your own providers close to travel.
