Halal food and Muslim-friendly travel in China

Look for 清真, plan prayers into the day, and check the dates around Ramadan 2027.

In mainland China, halal food is marked with two Chinese characters, 清真 (qīngzhēn), on a signboard issued by local authorities; look for those rather than Arabic script. China has no single national halal standard: rules are set by provinces and cities. In the Mastercard-CrescentRating Global Muslim Travel Index 2026, China ranks #70 of 150 destinations and #31 among non-OIC destinations.

How to recognise halal food

  • Look for 清真. Licensed halal premises display a 清真 signboard issued by the local ethnic affairs department. It is the most reliable sign you will see.
  • Don’t rely on Arabic script or a crescent. In 2019 Beijing told halal restaurants to remove them; many signs now carry only the Chinese characters.
  • Noodle shops are a good start. Lanzhou lamian shops, now often renamed Qinghai lamian, are commonly halal and found in hundreds of cities. Check for 清真 on the sign all the same.
  • Ask. Zhè ge shì qīngzhēn de ma? (这个是清真的吗?) means “Is this halal?” Show the characters on your phone if needed.

“Xinjiang restaurant” (新疆菜) describes a regional cuisine. It is not, by itself, a halal guarantee. More phrases for ordering are in Food and dining.

What JAKIM and MUIS recognition means here

Malaysia’s JAKIM lists six certification bodies in China and Singapore’s MUIS lists seven. MUIS explains that these foreign bodies certify halal products imported into Singapore. Their logo may appear on packaged food, but restaurants in China are signposted under local rules, so in a restaurant the 清真 sign is what to look for.

Outside the big cities, halal options can be harder to find. Plan meals before you go rather than on the day.

Praying while you travel

Mosque prayer halls in China are generally reserved for worshippers, while non-Muslim visitors may tour the courtyards. For Muslim travellers, the practical challenge is timing: long transfers, mountain days and evening shows can cut across prayer times. Build the day around them: an early start, a midday break near a mosque or your hotel, and transfers that leave room for prayer.

Travelling around Ramadan 2027

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, and Hari Raya Puasa falls on 10 March 2027 in Singapore and Malaysia. Exact dates depend on official moon-sighting announcements.

If you travel during Ramadan, plan for suhoor and iftar. Hotel breakfasts may start too late for suhoor, and halal restaurants near your hotel matter more than usual. If you would rather not fast on the road, compare dates after Hari Raya.

Where local arrangements help

A halal-friendly trip is very possible in China, but it works best planned in advance: which restaurants near each hotel, which day trips have halal food on the way, where to stop for prayer, and how to time transfers around them. That matters most for families, older travellers and routes beyond Beijing and Xi’an.

Questions travellers ask

In big cities, yes, if you look for the 清真 sign: halal noodle shops are everywhere, and Beijing and Xi’an have Muslim neighbourhoods. In smaller and remote destinations, plan ahead.

Is there a national halal certification in China?

Are Lanzhou noodle shops halal?

They are commonly halal and often run by Hui Muslim families from Qinghai, but check for 清真 on the sign.

Can I pray at mosques in China as a tourist?

City mosques’ prayer halls are reserved for worshippers, so Muslim travellers can pray there while sightseers tour the courtyards. Check opening before you go, as some mosques close for renovation.
