Decide what your phone must do

Compare your existing provider’s roaming with a suitable travel or local mobile service. Check device compatibility, activation, coverage, calls, messages and the data allowance.

Do not assume that a data package includes a local phone number or that it will receive the verification messages an app needs. Check those details with the provider before buying. If you keep your original SIM for account verification, understand the charges that may apply.

Prepare the local-service option

Shanghai’s official guide describes obtaining and registering a SIM at a carrier’s store using a passport. If that is your choice, check the current store, document requirements and package directly with the operator. Make sure your phone supports the offered service and ask how activation, top-ups and cancellation work.

Plan how to reach the store or accommodation before that connection is active. Save an address card and a map or written route that you can open without data. Wi-Fi can be useful, but it should not be the only way you can retrieve the first address.

A small app kit to test

  • Navigation — AMap Global (Gaode Maps). Shanghai’s official guide describes its English interface and routes for walking, public transport and driving. Search your first accommodation and save its Chinese address too. AMap guide.
  • Car hailing — DiDi. Shanghai’s official city guide explains how to switch the app to English and to check that the car’s number plate matches the app before boarding. Check the pickup point and destination before requesting a car.
  • Translation — Microsoft Translator. Install from Microsoft’s official app links. Where supported, download the Chinese language pack before leaving and test it with data off. Microsoft apps.
  • Payments — Alipay or WeChat/Weixin Pay. Complete registration, card linking and requested verification before arrival. Follow our setup steps.

Open each tool before departure. Save the first reservation and accommodation details outside the apps too, so a sign-in problem does not leave you without the address.

Run a small rehearsal

Switch off mobile data and try to find your arrival address and first reservation. If you cannot, fix that before travelling. Pair these steps with the payment guide and planning checklist. A tested, simple setup is easier to use on a tiring arrival day.
