Plan a Harbin snow trip for mid-December to late February. Last season the Harbin Ice-Snow World opened on 17 December 2025 and closed on 21 February 2026 when a warm spell melted the sculptures; the 2026–27 opening date had not been announced as of 2 November 2026. Four to six days covers Harbin plus one snow area, Snow Town or Yabuli; from Singapore or Kuala Lumpur you will usually connect through another Chinese city.
When to go
The ice-and-snow season is short and set by temperature, not by the calendar. Use last season as a guide and confirm this season’s dates before you book anything that cannot change.
| Period | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Mid- to late December | The Ice-Snow World usually opens in this window. Last season it opened on 17 December. |
| 5 January | The China–Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival opens every year on this date. 2026 was the 42nd edition. |
| January | The coldest month, and the heart of the season. |
| February | Still winter, but a warm spell can end the outdoor park early, as it did on 21 February 2026. |
On 12 October 2026 the organisers announced the 28th Ice-Snow World, expanded to 1.25 million square metres, without an opening date. We will update this page when the date is published.
If your trip falls in the Singapore school holidays, note that the MOE school year ends on 20 November 2026. Late November and early December are winter in Harbin, but the ice park is not yet open. A December trip that also covers Beijing or Shanghai is worth comparing; see Find your season.
How cold it gets, and how to prepare from the tropics
China’s weather service gives Harbin a January average minimum of around -24 °C and an extreme low of -38 °C. Winters are cold and dry. For someone arriving from 30 °C, this is the part of the trip to plan most carefully.
- Layers, not one heavy coat. A thermal base layer, a warm mid-layer and a windproof outer layer let you adjust between frozen streets and heated malls, trains and restaurants.
- Head, hands, feet. A hat that covers the ears, insulated gloves (with a thin pair underneath for using your phone), thermal socks and boots with grip for icy pavements.
- Short outdoor spells. Plan the ice park and street walks in blocks, with a warm indoor stop in between. This matters most for older parents and young children.
- Phone and power. Batteries drain quickly in the cold. Keep the phone in an inside pocket and carry a power bank, because you will rely on it for payments and maps.
Getting there from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Is there a direct flight? | We could not confirm a nonstop Singapore–Harbin flight. In 2025 Changi Airport announced Shenzhen Airlines flights to Harbin via Shenzhen, four times a week. Check the current schedule; otherwise connect through a larger Chinese city. |
| Time difference? | None. Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Harbin all keep UTC+8. |
| Visa? | Singapore and China have a mutual 30-day visa exemption for ordinary passports; Malaysia has a mutual exemption of up to 30 days per entry. Check your own passport and purpose. |
| Anything to fill in before landing? | Check the arrival card and other steps in Entry essentials. |
Connecting through Beijing is also a way to add a few days in the capital before or after the cold. Compare rail and air options in Getting around China.
How many days you need
| Days | A workable shape |
|---|---|
| 3 | Harbin only: the Ice-Snow World at dusk, a walk through the old town and along the Songhua River, one slower day indoors. |
| 5 | Harbin plus one snow area: two nights in Harbin, then Yabuli for skiing or Snow Town for the snow village, then back. |
| 7 | Harbin, Yabuli and Snow Town, with a buffer day for weather. Comfortable for families and older travellers. |
Add a day at each end if you are connecting through another city. Long transfers in deep cold take more out of you than the same journey at home.
Snow Town or Yabuli
| Snow Town (Shuangfeng) | Yabuli | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A forest-farm village known for deep snow, in Hailin, Mudanjiang | A ski area on the Harbin–Mudanjiang high-speed line |
| Distance from Harbin | About 280 km | Fastest high-speed train to Yabuli West about 1 hour |
| Getting there | No direct high-speed train; train to Yabuli, then road for the last stretch | High-speed train, then local transfer to the slopes |
| Best for | First snow, photographs, a night in a snow village | Skiing, snowboarding, a resort stay |
| Plan for | An overnight stay; road conditions can change the timing | Ski lessons and equipment hire if you are new to it |
Many travellers combine the two, since Yabuli sits on the way to Snow Town.
Travelling with parents, children or a first-snow group
Harbin in winter is very manageable, but several pieces have to fit together: an evening at the ice park in the coldest part of the day, a train to Yabuli, a road transfer to Snow Town, and warm breaks in between. That is where local arrangements help most: a driver who knows the winter roads, a guide who paces the outdoor time, and meal stops planned around any dietary needs, such as halal food. Mention them in your request.

How many days are enough for Harbin?
Three days for Harbin alone; five to seven days if you add Yabuli, Snow Town or both.

About 280 km. There is no direct high-speed train: take the train to Yabuli, then continue by road.
Do Singaporeans and Malaysians need a visa for Harbin?
Ordinary Singapore and Malaysian passport holders can use mutual visa exemptions of up to 30 days per entry. Check the official rules for your passport and purpose in Entry essentials.
